The 2013 Fox Valley Folk Music and Storytelling Festival will be held at Island Park in Geneva, IL. This year marks the 37th year this festival will be held in the Fox Valley region. The 2013 Fox Valley Folk Music And Storytelling Festival is Illinois largest folk festival, there will be over 100 hours of folk music, dance and storytelling on eight stages featuring more than 30 of the finest Midwest and national folk music & storytelling acts. Admission is a donation of $15, $10 teens and elders, with 12 and under being free. There is a$5 discount for both days and a family rate of $40 per day for mom, dad, and their children.
The 2013 Fox Valley Folk Music and Storytelling Festival will have 8 stage areas that will run both days of the festival. There will be an old time community barn dance 6-730pm on Sunday. There will be a children’s area, a folk art area, and food vendors. This year on Saturday August 31 starting at 7pm there will be a live 2 hour show broadcast on 98.7FM from a stage set up at the Unitarian Universalist Church on 102 S second street in Geneva. To attend this special event that features 6 artists there will be a $20 admission for adults and a $15 admission for seniors if paid in advance, at the door the fee goes to $25 and $20 respectively. On Sunday there will be a Ghost Stories storytelling event starting at 7:30pm and running until 10pm that has a special admission of $5. All weekend there will be events or workshops on folk music and storytelling. Exact topics and times will be available from their website the closer we get to the date. The music and stories come from many traditions and cultures, including some of the best of the new generation of folksong & story writers that represent the extensions of those traditions.
With the exception of the live broadcast the majority of the 2013 Fox Valley Folk Music and Storytelling Festival takes place on Island Park. Island Park is a 13 acre park that sits on the Fox river, access to it is from Rt. 25 north of State Street and from a parking lot just south of State street and east of Rt 25. Due to limited parking immediately near Island Park I would gather that most people who attend this are going to have a bit of a walk from parking in Geneva to the festival site. The 2013 Fox Valley Folk Music and Storytelling Festival provides a unique opportunity to experience and participate in a wide variety of arts and traditions not available through the popular entertainment markets. Unfortunately we have several family obligations that weekend including a wedding on Sunday that will keep us away from the festival this year but if you are not out of town for the Labor Day holiday I would suggest you check this out.
