I have not written on osteoporosis and bone density in some time. Today I went diving into the literature and found this gem of a study published in August of 2018. The authors concluded that whole body vibration improves bone density, something we have seen in our practice.
This paper was a review of all the published studies on whole body vibration to treat low bone density. They found 10 studies which met their criteria for review. There were 462 women involved in the 10 published studies the authors examined. They found that there was a significant improvement in lumbar spine bone mineral density in women who underwent a whole body vibration exercise protocol. They also found improvement in hip bone mineral density in postmenopausal women under age 65. They conclude that whole body vibration is a safe and effective method to improve bone mineral density.
Interestingly enough the authors found that bone mineral density improved with use of whole body vibration but they found greater improvement after 108 sessions. They make a point that frequency of the unit needs to be greater than 20Hz, we use 40Hz. They also state a few observations that we are going to consider implementing in our program. Our program is much more than just whole body vibration but the observations they state make sense to us based on what we see in our BStrong4Life clients and their DEXA scans. There is always room for the research to amend our practice in order to treat our patients better.
I point out papers such as this one because it is important for me to “show my work” so to speak. That when we say our BStrong4Life program can improve bone density it is because it can and that is not just a sales pitch we throw around. We have had patients with significant improvement with bone mineral density and you can read some of their stories on our website.
