Spinal Manipulation IS Better Than Drug Therapy

The journal SpineSide posture spinal manipulation is better than drug therapy for acute low back pain.  A recent article published in the journal Spine studied the effects of the type of lumbar adjustment we utilize every day and which our patients are quite familiar with.  This study was examining the effectiveness of the side posture lumbar spine adjustment as it compared to an over the counter anti-inflammatory drug therapy for the treatment of acute low back pain.  This study involved three treatment groups, one test group was given the adjustment with a placebo drug, the other test group was given a placebo adjustment with the real drug diclofenac, and the control group was given both a placebo drug and placebo adjustment. Interestingly enough the majority of participants in the control group dropped out of the study due to unrelenting low back pain. The group that received the true spinal adjustment plus the placebo drug not only got better faster but also experienced a better quality of life as evidenced by data given to the examiners of the study during and after treatment. The authors of the article concluded; ” In a subgroup of patients with acute nonspecific low back pain, spinal manipulation was significantly better than non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac and clinically superior to placebo.”

We see this everyday, the vast majority of patients that walk through our doors walk out pain free. The care we are able to provide is far superior to drug management for low back pain and this study proves it, not that we needed that affirmation to justify what we do.  Ask Dr. Staker about it, he has over 40 years of experience in successfully treating patients with low back pain among a whole host of other conditions. He could tell of the patients that used a cane to walk in the door and forgot it here because they did not need when they left.  That is not to say that we are able to help everyone, there have been a few patients who have benefited from our relationships with interventional pain specialists  and neurosurgeons.  If we can not help you we know that a combined effort between us and these specialists will work in your best  interest.

While we do not need studies like these to prove our care effective the rest of the world has fallen into this idea that randomized, controlled, double blinded studies are necessary to prove the validity of any type of care. Although there are a large number of medical treatments that have not undergone the kind of study chiropractic care has, they are accepted as safe and effective due to being proven by experience.  The basics of chiropractic have changed little since 1895 but we continue to be hit with charges of being unscientific or unsafe despite the volumes of studies that support our care and over 100 years of  experience.  If you are reading this and happen to be “on the fence” regarding chiropractic care know this, chiropractic care is probably the safest treatment you can do for low back or neck pain.  In the above referenced study there were no adverse effects noted in the group treated by spinal manipulation. Chiropractic care is effective, so effective, it should be your first choice for acute or chronic back pain. There are also substantial cost savings involved with chiropractic care so much so that some health plans are requiring patients seek chiropractic first for back pain before surgery can be an option.

If you or someone you know is on the fence, jump off and give us a call.  You will not regret it.
