We are quickly approaching the St. Charles Scarecrow Festival and the autumn on the Fox arts and crafts show. This year marks the 29th year that scarecrow fest and the arts and crafts show have been held in St. Charles. The main attraction of scarecrow fest is the scarecrow contest where over 100 individuals, groups, and businesses build and showcase their scarecrow for us, the attendees, to vote on the best in several categories. The majority of scarecrow’s to judge and things to do at the fest occur at Lincoln Park on West Main street between 4th and 5th streets. There are other activities such as amusement rides one block east and north from Lincoln park as well as some events at near the municipal center along the river walk on the east side of the river. The craft show is located in Pottawatomie Park. You can see the 2014 map by clicking on this link.
Overall scarecrow fest is a fun event, I take my family every year and my son’s class always makes a scarecrow for us to see. Over the past several years the organizers have tried to do things to get you over to the east side of the river and this year is no different. By the municipal center there will be several kids activities such as a petting zoo and kid themed day events. There is live entertainment throughout each day on the main stage at Lincoln Park and on a second stage near the municipal center.
The organizers would prefer you to park at either Haines Middle School or Charlestown mall and take their free trolley to the event but parking is also available in both parking decks and a few other city lots. There are several dedicated ADA parking spots located along St. Patricks Church on the west side of town and some near the fire station on the east side. All parking is free, admission is free, and as I mentioned the trolley is free.
The St. Charles Scarecrow Festival opens October 10 at 10am and runs until 9pm on the 10th and 11. On the last day, October 12 it opens again at 10am and ends at 5pm. If you are looking for a great Fall day festival you can’t find a better on in the Fox Valley as Scarecrow Fest.
